고영훈 Ko Young Hoon

고영훈 작가는 제주에서 태어나 홍익대학교와 동대학원 서양화가를 졸업하였습니다. 1974년 제 2회 『앙데팡당』전을 통해 극사실적 경향의 돌 작품을 소개하기 시작했고, 제 6회 인도 트리엔날레와 제 42회 베니스비엔날레에 출품하면서 이 경향의 대표적 작가로 부상하였습니다. 1985~1993년에 서울 두손갤러리와 파리 알랭브롱델갤러리에서 열린 개인전에서 작품을 소개하였고, 1990년 후반 이후부터 가나화랑의 전속작가가 되었습니다. 1987년 대한민국미술기자상, 1991년에는 토탈미술대상을 수상하였습니다. 바젤아트페어, 시카고아트페어 등과 크리스티, 소더비 등의 미술시장을 통해 국제적 위상을 견지하고 있습니다.

2000년대 들어 고영훈이 선택한 회화의 주제는 자연물과 전통 도자 항아리로 한 걸음 더 확장되었습니다. 이러한 주제의 변화에도 불구하고 그의 논법은 일루전에 대한 탐구로 일관하고 있습니다. 실재와 환영 사이의 충돌과 융합 그리고 궁극적으로는 그 관계를 전도시킴으로써 실재와 환영 사이의 경계를 모호하게 만듭니다. 그의 그림 안에서는 실재의 항아리도 환영으로서 항아리가 아닌 어떤 존재입니다.

Ko Young Hoon was born in Jeju 1952, and completed both his BFA and MFA from the Department of Painting in the College of Fine Art & Design at Hongik University. He introduced hyper-realistic works depicting stones in the second 『Indépendant』 Exhibition in 1974. His participation in the 6th India Triennale and the 42nd Venice Biennale made him one of the most representative artists in Korean Hyperrealism.

He had solo exhibitions at the Duson Gallery in Seoul and the Galerie Alain Blondel Gallery in Paris from 1985 to 1993, He has worked exclusively with the Gana Gallery since the mid-1990s. He received the Korean Art Journalist Award in 1987 and the Total Art Prize in 1991. He has established and maintained his international status through his participation in prestigious art fair such as the Basel Art Fair and the Chicago Art Fair, and in art markets through auction houses such as Christie's and Sotherby's. In the new Millennium, Ko Young Hoon gone back to using natural objects and traditional Korean pots as his pictural subjects. The motivation behind this change is again his persistent contemplation of illusion. He continues to confuse and invert the relationship between reality and illusion by actively invoking conflicts and fusion between appearance and existence. In his paintings a pot is neither a 'real' pot nor an illusion, but some combination of the two which achieves its own existence.
