The Audain Prize for the Visual Arts is one of Canada’s most prestigious honours. This annual prize worth $100,000 is awarded to a senior artist in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the arts. Recipients of the Audain Prize are highly acclaimed Canadian cultural icons. The Audain Prize is presented by the Audain art Museum.
From 2004 to 2018, the Audain Prize was funded by the Audain Foundation and administered by the Vancouver Art Gallery, in conjunction with the VIVA Awards. Since 2019, the Audain Prize continues to be supported by the Audain Foundation but is now administered by the Audain Art Museum. The Audain Prize has honoured some of Canada’s most influential artists – including Susan Point, Paul Wong, Liz Magor, Gathie Falk and Gordon Smith. The recipient is selected by an independent panel of jurors and announced at the Audain Prize ceremony in September. The Audain Prize is currently administered by the Audain Art Museum.
Vancouver: 221A, Access Gallery, Artspeak Gallery, Grunt Gallery, Malaspina Printmakers Society, Or Gallery, Other Sights for Artists’ Projects, UNIT/PITT Society for Art & Critical Awareness, VIVO Media Arts Centre, and Western Front. Kelowna: Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. Victoria: Open Space Arts Society. All members of the Canadian Association of Artist Run Art Centres, British Columbia Chapter, these twelve organizations add greatly to the vitality of visual arts in the province and the various communities they operate within.
In this exceptional year when these important non-profit organizations are losing revenue from closing their doors, $20,000 was added to the $100,000 Audain Prize for the Visual Arts fund for 2020 so that $10,000 could be awarded to each of these twelve art centres towards operational support. No jury convened this year and the decision to support as many artists as possible was made by the Board of Directors.
