The Jindřich Chalupecký Award, named after the leading Czech theorist and critic of fine arts and literature, essayist and philosopher, was founded in 1990 on the initiative of Václav Havel, Jiří Kolář and Theodor Pištěk. It is intended for visual artists under the age of 35, living or working in the Czech Republic. The award also recognizes the lifelong work of Jindřich Chalupecký (1910–1990) and his activity, through which he stimulated an unofficial, avant-garde artistic life in our country after 1969 and advocated that Czech non-conformist fine art maintain its originality and uninterrupted continuity with tradition. modern art and European art culture. The Jindřich Chalupecký Award is intended for visual artists living or working in the Czech Republic who reach the maximum age of 35 by 31 December of the calendar year in which the finals of the Award and the announcement of the laureate take place. Citizenship of the Czech Republic is not a condition. The Jindřich Chalupecký Prize is awarded for extraordinary artistic work in the field of visual art. It is intended for the upcoming generation of artists whose work has the potential to succeed in the long term in the context of the Czech and international art scene and embodies an exceptional attitude in terms of content and form. The prize is awarded to artists working in any media, it also respects interdisciplinary overlaps and other current trends in contemporary art. The awarding of the Jindřich Chalupecký Prize is announced as a competition in which the artists themselves enter. Experts in the field of fine arts can also nominate artists through the email address info@sjch.cz. The nominated artists will be invited by representatives of the Jindřich Chalupecký Society to enter the competition. Artists who were in the past in the final of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, but did not win the title of laureate, can apply repeatedly. The Jindřich Chalupecký Award is decided by an independent jury of experts in the field of visual arts, appointed by the Board of Directors of the Jindřich Chalupecký Society. The jury has five members and its members are both citizens of the Czech Republic and foreign experts, usually in a ratio of 2: 3. Jury membership is limited to three years. Jindřich Chalupecký's company has no right to influence the jury's decision. The selection of the finalists and winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award is the result of a consensus of the members of the jury, based on an intensive joint discussion and a thorough selection process. Each year, the jury selects five finalists, which the Jindřich Chalupecký Society intensively supports throughout the year, especially in the work on a new work for a joint autumn exhibition held at one of the partner institutions, ie the National Gallery in Prague, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, or gallery PLATO Ostrava. During the exhibition, the jury will select the winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award for the relevant year, whose name or name it will announce and present the Award during the ceremony.
