1807 -
네덜란드  (NETHERLANDS)
The Prix de Rome is the oldest and most generous award for visual artists under 40 and architects under 35. The history of the prize goes back to 1808 when Lodewijk Napoleon introduced the Prix de Rome in the Netherlands to promote the arts. The prize has since been regularly renewed, but the aim is still to trace talented visual artists and architects and to encourage them to develop further and increase their visibility. Since 2005, an architecture edition and two visual arts editions have been held over a four-year period. Since January 2013, the prize has been organized and financed by the Mondriaan Fund.
In line with the development that the prize has undergone in more than 200 years and with contemporary ambitions, the Mondriaan Fund aims to trace and position talent with the Prix de Rome. Talented visual artists and architects are encouraged to develop further. This prize also brings attention to (the importance of) contemporary visual art and architecture in a festive way. Thanks to the prize, their work is made visible to a wider audience.
